Borders Store Closing

As some/most of you probably know by now, Borders is closing all of it's stores soon. The company filed for bankruptcy some time ago and closed some of it's stores in an effort to keep the company afloat. They were also trying to find someone to buy the company, but all their efforts failed in the end. All remaining stores will be closing within the next couple of months. The store I go to said that they will probably be closed within the next 6 weeks.

Their liquidations have begun in all stores with up to 40% off all prices. If you have Borders Bucks you will only be able to redeem them through 7/31/11, after that they are no longer valid. They will still be honoring any and all gift cards throughout the duration of their liquidation.

If you are a Borders Rewards Plus Member, you will be able to receive your extra discounts through August 5th only. After that it'll just be like you're a regular rewards member, but there probably wouldn't be a point of using it anymore.

Now this 40% off does not apply to Borders.com. I'm not sure if they are going to maintain their website once the stores close, but it is possible. When Circuit City closed it's doors a few years ago, they still maintained a website store, so it is possible.

I've always loved Borders so this makes me a little sad. Their selection has always been different and easier to search through than some other bookstores and I was always able to find what I wanted in Borders.

2011 Tax Free Weekends

During the summer (usually in August) some states hold a tax-free weekend. Now the standards usually vary a little from state-to-state, but these weekends usually allow you to buy school supplies, clothes, and even some electronics completely tax free.

Like in Maryland, from August 14-20 any clothing or footwear purchase up to $100 will be tax free. Last year school supplies were included but are not this year.

You can check out the whole list of states that are participating here along with what items you can purchase and the maximum value of those purchases.

You can click on your state government's webpage for all the details as well as any/all exclusions to this. Since it is only July this could be subject to change in the next couple weeks, but keep it as a bookmark if your state is included so that you can keep track of any changes or additions.

$1/2 Bic Pen Coupon

Yay!! The coupon for $1/2 Bic Stationary Products that I mentioned last week has reset on Coupons.com!

Please remember, when you print this coupon you do have to print an additional coupon with it for it to print correctly. If you don't you won't get the expiration date and the barcode will come out wonky.

Use these this week at Target to score free pens

Here's how:

Buy 2 packs of Bic Cristal Pens (blue, black, or red) @ 0.50 each = $1 for 2
-(1) $1/2 Bic Stationary Products coupon
= 2 free packs of pens!

You can print two of these coupons, so if you use both at the same time, you can four free packs of pens.

This is awesome if you're doing back to school shopping or school supply donation shopping!

0.75/1 Freschetta By The Slice

If you're a fan of Freschetta's By The Slice pizza, then "Like" Freschetta on Facebook to print a coupon for 0.75 off 1 By The Slice package. This will double in most stores and will make the single slices under $1 (at least by my stores prices) when paired with a sale.

$1.50/1 Skintimate Cream Shave Gel

There is an awesome new high-value Skintimate Cream Shave Gel coupon that will save you $1.50 off one can of it. This should make for really inexpensive Shave Gel when you pair this with a sale.

This is a SmartSource coupon, and if you've never printed a SS coupon it will have to install it's Java Applet in order to print. It's not harmful to your computer and you will never know it is there.

Monday, July 18, 2011

B2G1 Edy's Shakes and Smoothies

"Like" Edy's on Facebook, click on the "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" tab and there you should be able to print a coupon for buy 2 get 1 free Edy’s Slow Churned Shakes or Smoothies cups. I like the shakes a lot, and I usually see them in my stores (Safeway and Giant) for $1 a cup, so this is really a pretty nice coupon.

25% off a Single Item at Old Navy

Old Navy just released a great new coupon on their Facebook page that will score you 25% off any single item. It only seems to exclude jewelry.

Also, just as an FYI, for some reason when I printed mine, the coupon itself printed fine but all around it was completely black instead of the page being blank like it normally is. Don't know why that happened, it might just be me, but I wanted to give a heads up anyway.

$5/1 Bengay Product

There is an awesome coupon up on Coupons.com. Head on over to print a coupon for $5 off ANY Bengay product. The only restriction is no travel sizes. This should make for some really inexpensive Bengay when paired with a sale.

Print while you can, I'm not sure how long it will be available.

$1/2 Bic Pen Coupon

There is an awesome new coupon on Coupons.com for $1/2 Bic Stationary Products (use zip code 90210 if you can't find it.

Now for some reason when you print this coupon alone it prints blurry and there is no expiration date. I'm not sure why, but it seems to be a common problem. The best way to avoid this, is to print another coupon with it. As long as something else is printed with it, it seems to print fine.

You can use this to help you get close to free pens at Target!

Here's how:

(2) Bic Cristal Glide Pens (10pack) @ $1.02 ea = $2.04

Reach Toothbrush Coupons

Target released four new Reach toothbrush coupons this afternoon. They are on Target's website, but they are actually manufacturer's coupons that you can use anywhere. They don't print with a Target logo on them and will say "Manufacturer coupon" at the top.

You'll find coupons for:
  • $3/1 Reach Total Care Sensitive Toothbrush (2ct)
  • $2/1 Reach by Design Toothbrush (2ct)
  • $2/1 Reach Total Care Whitening Toothbrushes (1ct)
  • $2/1 Reach by Design Toothbrushes (1ct)
These are all pretty high value, so I'd print them now before they reach their print limit.

Eating Out Without Breaking the Bank

"You eat out a lot, doesn't that cost a lot?"

A friend of mine asked me that the other day. I admit, I do have a tendency to eat out a lot mainly when I'm working and going to classes, but that doesn't mean my whole paycheck goes to restaurants.

Now, of course, most people would say "You should just bring dinner/lunch with you, it'll save the most money". Is it true? Of course it is. I'm just not always the best at following it. Now there are days (like this week) where I have class from 8:30am-3:30pm and in those cases, I usually bring some food from home to munch on throughout the day.

But the gist of it is; I know myself very well and if I know that I'm going from work straight to class in the evening, I would much rather just pick up something and take it to school with me. It's fast, easy, and believe it or not, not that expensive. I have learned over the past couple years how to eat out (for me about 2-3 times a week on average) without draining my bank account.

And of course for those of us that are weight conscious, most places do have healthier options available now, too. I am someone who tries to be as health conscious as I can and I still eat out, but I've also still lost about 8 pounds in the past month and a half. So eating out doesn't necessarily have to mean it's not healthy either.

Tip # 1 Plan for it.

I personally take $20 cash out of my checking account every week for eating out. For some people that might be too much and that's fine. You do what would work for you. Honestly, I rarely use the entire amount and if I don't then the money goes to something else. For instance this week, I used $5 for lunch on Tuesday (during a 7 hour class like I mentioned above) and $4 last night for dinner after class on the way home. That's only $9 out of the $20, and in fact I can probably just save the other $11 for next weeks outings.

There is also gift cards. You can use a site like Restaurant.com where you can get gift cards to your favorite restaurants inexpensively. You can also get gift cards from survey sites (see my link above for some survey company ideas). I loooooove Subway, anyone that knows me well is very aware of this. I am also a member of ZoomPanel surveys. What do the two have to do with each other? Well I can use the ZoomPanel points I use from Surveys towards gift cards, and I usually get a $10 Subway gift card (their gift cards unfortunately are down until August 1st, for the record) with 1,000 points. There are other gift card options, but I know I'll get the most beneficial use out of Subway, so I always redeem for those as soon as I hit 1,000 points. I haven't paid for Subway in a long time, and this makes me happy.

Tip # 2 Subscribe to emails

Find your favorite and most frequented restaurants online. There is probably somewhere on their website where you can sign up for their emails. Take a couple minutes and put in your email address (I recommend a deals-only email address so that your personal email isn't bombarded) to all your restaurants. Sometimes they will send you a special offer immediately just for signing up for their email list.

Let's use Arby's as an example (mainly just because that's where I stopped for dinner last night). Sign up for Arby's Extras, which is their email subscription list, and you will be sent a coupon for a free roast beef sandwich within 24 hours, but it's usually almost immediately. That right there is a free lunch, or almost free if you buy a drink with it.

Plus, being on their email list, not only will you get occasional coupons in your email but you'll also find out about upcoming specials that they might be having. You'll also find out about new products they might be promoting. So it's a win all the way around!

Tip # 3 Use online coupons

A lot of restaurants, especially chains and quick-service ones, have coupons on their website under a "Special Offers" tab or you can find them online by an internet search (That is if you couldn't find them on my blog, of course!). This is good if you don't really want to subscribe to their emails, or you just plan on going once, or something like that.

Tip #4 Check Newspapers

There have been a lot of restaurant coupons in the paper lately. There have always been a few here and there, but lately they seem to be full of restaurant coupons. Dunkin Donuts is one I see often. Recently they've had coupons for free small Frozen Hot Chocolate drinks (which I took full advantage of) and a Free Bagel Sandwich with the purchase of a drink. Most locations will accept these coupons and stores usually have a sign up if they don't. There are also more sit-down type restaurants, like Olive Garden that have coupons in the newspapers from time to time as well.

Tip #5 Check out the value menu

A lot of restaurants these days have some sort of a value menu so take advantage of it. And before you all start giving me that look, there are some healthier options on a lot of value menus. The Wendy's in my area have $1 side salads and things like that, so you don't have to break your pant size either. You can usually get a full meal from the value menus for just a couple dollars. Like at Wendy's there is a value menu meal I usually get that costs me about $3.50 a sandwich, medium fries and medium drink. Not bad at all.

These are mainly what I use when I go out to eat. If anyone has any other ideas feel free to leave them in the comments or email me.

Donate school supplies to those in need

Those of you that know me or have been reading my blog for a long time, know that I am a pursuing a Masters in School Counseling. Given that, I've been spending a lot of time in a couple public schools in my area, getting on-site training and all that, but I've also been able to see how little some kids really do have. Both of the schools I've been placed in so far are not in particularly affluent areas, there are a lot of single parent (or some other form of guardian arrangement) situations and finances are extremely tight.

With the school year looming, for some parents there is now the problem of trying to find the money to buy all the supplies that their kids will need for school. If you're a parent, you've seen how long those lists have gotten over the years. Just for me, I remember what I needed in High School and to see lists now, it's like doubled in the past decade. It can be extremely rough for some parents who are barely making ends meet without the extra expense of all the school supplies/clothes/etc their kids will need.

Every year, Staples has a school supply donation drive where you can leave new, unused school supplies in the front of their store and they will be donated to families that can really use it (to find out more about the program, head over here to dosomething.org). I donated quite a bit last year and fully intend on doing more this year.

I ask, even if you have no need to buy school supplies, consider donating to the school supply drives in Staples as well as other drives that might be in your area (you can google "school supply donation") to really help those kids, not just the families but the kids, that really need it the most. Most of what I donate, I've gotten for free or for pennies during back to school sales. So I'm not sitting here saying I spend hundreds of dollars doing this and you don't have to either.

I highlighted back to school deals this morning that were 0.01 and $1 at Staples and Target also released coupons last week for school supplies. Today alone when I went to Target, I got two packs of pens and two packs of Sharpies for 0.04 for all four packs. All of them will go into my collection bag and will get dropped at Staples once I've filled it.

I know I don't post a lot of personal stuff on here, which is my choice, but this is something that is very near and dear to me. I am making a career out of being an educator/school counselor and really wanting to help kids succeed, but I've been there too. I grew up in a single-family household and there were times my Mom couldn't afford everything I needed either. So now that I'm an adult, I'm trying to give to kids in need like people did for my family when I was in school.

So this was just my "PSA" for today, but I really do hope that some of you reading this will take a couple dollars, if you can, (or even $0 if you can get it for free) and help out the kids in your area that really need it.

Free Slurpee at 7-11!

In their annual honoring of July 11th (7/11), 7-11 is offering free slurpees!

Of course, there may be random stores not participating, but most will be. If you want more details check out the event page here.

$2/1 Visine Eye Drops

Coupons.com has a great new coupon for $2 off ANY Visine product. There is no size restriction on this which means you can use it on the travel size and get free eye drops!

It should show up for everyone, but use zip code 90210 if you can't find it.

Lots of Target Clearance!!

Right now, Target has clearance throughout, pretty much, the entire store. Since I saw so much, I thought I'd highlight some of what I saw at my Target this afternoon. Remember not all Target's have the same price or same mark-downs. What might be 30% off for me could be 50% off or not marked down at all yet in other regions. You will find, what I think, the best deals are in red.

There were a bunch of different variety Chi hair products with a 50% markdown in my store. If you're a fan of salon-quality hair products, now would be a good time to stock up.

Gillette Hydration Body Wash special value packs are down about 15% at my store. There was a $1 off Gillette Body Wash coupon in last Sunday's (7/3/11) coupon insert, that would make this $2.38, or a little less than 50% off original retail value ($3.99). So not too bad. My store had tons and they will probably discount further, so it could be one to wait on. The Softsoap foaming hand soap 8.5oz are also on clearance right now. There are no coupons that I can see (feel free to let me know if I'm wrong!), but they do come out regularly, so it's something to keep an eye out on!
You'll also find Olay Quench Body Wash with bonus Olay Cleansing Body Wash special packs on markdown as well. These are currently $3.48 for me, which honestly is pretty good on it's own for Olay Body Wash.

A couple packages had a $2 off peelie on them which would make it amazing at $1.48. There was also a $1/2 Olay Body Wash coupon in last Sunday's (7/3/11) P&G insert, which would make it $5.96 for two, or $2.98 each. Really not a bad deal no matter how you spin it.
Venus Pro Skin Disposable single razors are down 15%, or to $4.24 at my store. There was a coupon in last Sunday's (7/3/11) P&G insert for $2 off any ONE Venus Razor, which includes disposable razors. Using that coupon would make this $2.24 or over half off the retail price ($4.99). Awesome deal!

It seems that all the Dove deodorant bonus packs for men and woman are being clearanced out now. The men's Dove has a bonus travel size deodorant bonus, and the women's Dove has a full size body mist as a bonus. The women's bonus seems to give you more for your money, in my opinion, but of course it depends on your usage.

For the Women: there was a $1 off Dove antiperspirant coupon in the 6/26/11 Red Plum insert that you can use for this (some regions got a 0.75 coupon), that would make this as low as $2.38

But check out this awesome deal for men!
Buy 2 Men's Dove+ Care deodorants (as seen above) = 6.76
- (1) $1/2 Men's Dove + Care deodorant Target Printable
- (2) $2 off Dove Men+ Care deodorant 2.7 or 3oz size
from 6/26/11 Red Plum insert

(these bonus packs are 2.7oz and should work fine here)
=1.76 for both, or 0.88 each!

Here a couple finds from the skin care aisle. All are were originally $5.99 and down to $5.08 each. Not fantastic yet, but your store might be different. If nothing else, it's products to keep your eye on for deeper discounts in the coming weeks.
  • The Garnier Brusher Cleanser has a $1 Manufacturer's printable that would make it $4.08.
  • The $1 off Any L'Oreal Skin Care Item found in this weekend's (7/10/11) Red Plum insert, would make the 360 cleanser $4.08.
  • In last week's P&G insert (7/3/11) there was a coupon for $3 off ONE Olay Pro-X, Regenerist or Total Effects Facial Moisturizer or Facial Cleanser that would make these wipes $2.08. You might also have gotten a regional Target mailer with a $1 off Olay Cleanser coupon in it, that will make this even better at $1.08!

All summer/Fourth of July/Gardening/Outdoor Furniture is all making it's way out. Most furniture is up to at least 50% off, summer stuff is already condensed into one aisle and up to 30% off as well.
